Why do I need to study English and Maths at College?

It's very simple really....English and Maths qualifications give you the essential skills you need for life.

What does this mean?

It means the skills you learn from these qualifications will allow you to communicate effectively in different life situations such as in your studies at college, in work and at home, for example you may need to work out how much paint you need to decorate your room or the whole house!

At the moment,  you can't know the future. You could find a job where you need to talk to the public, write reports, solve maths problems, such as working out percentages and ratios, know how much discount to give to customer. You may even decide to start your own business. Ask yourself, who's going to loan you money if you can't work out interest rates?

What are you going to do next year?

GCSE/FS English and Maths qualifications will also improve your chances of going to university, finding an apprenticeship, or gaining employment. Without these qualifications, you will really limit your choices when this year ends. You can't know what the future holds for you.

We all know that someone with good GCSEs in English and Maths earns about £2,000 a year more than those without these qualifications when they start work. This figures increases the more years you work.

A new start, a new challenge

It really doesn't matter what your past experiences of English or Maths have been. You should see this as a new start.

At WKC, our aim is to get you to pass your GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 4 or above. If you are doing Functional Skills, we work with you to get a pass.

How does it all work?

Well, if you're under 19 and don't  have grade 4s or above in English and Maths, you will be need to attend GCSE or Functional Skill classes for two to three hours a week. This depends on the course you are enrolled on and what grades you got for your GCSEs in English and Maths.

The lessons are an important part of your study programme. You must attend all your classes in the same way as your main programme. As you know, we expect you to attend the college for 100% of the time you are with us or as close to it as possible.

English and Maths teachers will work closely with your tutors and Curriculum Managers to make sure you are attending and taking part in your classes.

Who teaches the English and Maths classes?

All your lessons are delivered by English and Maths specialists and are linked to your main programme of study.

All your teachers are there to support you, so please feel that you can approach them at any time for help and support. The main reason you attend English and Maths classes is to develop your literacy and numeracy skills with confidence.

How does the teaching work?

There are taught sessions, small tuition groups, out of class activities that you will need to complete on your own with help from online resources, including something called Century Tech. Century Tech is a personalised learning programme which uses Artificial Intelligence to make sure the learning materials are tailored to meet your needs.
